Description

Porcelain is a diverse and versatile material. When high fired it is extremely hard and durable. When thin it can be translucent. It is resistant to thermal shock. As well as fine domestic items it can be used to make thick, heavy objects such as pestles and mortars. It is white but can readily be coloured. Derivatives of porcelain helped man travel to the Moon. From darning thimbles and jewellery to spark plugs and huge insulators it has found application in a wide variety of contexts since Marco Polo first brought back porcelain utensils from the Orient. It endures as beautiful material with which to make useful and decorative vessels.
Porcelain is sometimes thought of as a difficult material to throw. It is more helpful, and more accurate, simply to think of it as different to earthenware and stoneware clays.
